Headstart/Preschool Summer Joint Screening

Where: Bath County Board Of Education Annex

When: July 19, 2018, 9 am- 3 pm

For children who are 3, 4, or 5  (5, after August 1st )

Eligibility is based on family income unless the child has a disability.

 

 

Please bring the following (if you have them available)

  • Verification of household income ~ Consideration for Head Start (ages 3-4) or State Funded Preschool (4 yr only
  • Birth Certificate (certified)
  • Immunization Certificate
  • Physical Exam
  • Legal Guardianship (if applicable)

What is Screening….and what to expect the day of your child’s appointment?

 

 

  • Screening is accomplished through games and play.  We want this to be a pleasant experience for you and your child.  Please talk with your child about what to expect on this day.

 

  • Your child will be screened in five developmental areas.  The areas include motor, concepts, self-help, social and language.

 

Motor includes large and fine motor skills…your child will be asked to jump, skip, put blocks together and use a pencil to copy.

 

Concepts will include naming colors and shapes.  Counting and using prepositional words like “under”, “beside” and “over”.

 

Self-help consists of a parent questionnaire with questions about how your child helps themselves.

 

Language will include saying words to see if there are any concerns with speech (how clearly a child speaks), looking at pictures and naming them.  Listening to what someone said or did and being able to repeat what was said or done.

 

  • Vision and hearing will also be screened to see if there are any concerns with how your child is seeing and hearing.

 

  • The screening process usually takes around 1 ½ to 2 hours.

 

  • You will be asked to complete paperwork while your child is screened.  The paperwork will include registration forms, permission forms, and questionnaires about your child’s social/emotional skills.

 

 

 

RTI

Response to Intervention

A Multi-tiered System of Supports

 

In an effort to help all struggling students, Congress has added requirements to require schools to provide a research-based process called Response to Intervention (RtI). According to the National Center on Response to Intervention, the goals of RtI are to:

  • Identify students at risk of failure
  • Monitor student progress
  • Provide research-based interventions
  • Make changes to interventions based on student progress
  • Identify students with Learning Disabilities

 

 

The use of RtI with all struggling students has the potential of limiting academic failure and increasing

the accuracy of special education evaluations. The use of RtI information may also lead to earlier

identification of students who have disabilities and need special education services.

Response to Intervention (RtI) involves multiple steps including screening and using the results from the

screening to determine specific interventions to meet the needs of entire classrooms or individual

students. The focus is on improving instruction based on student needs. Nothing in the RtI process

prevents teachers or parents from referring a student they suspect may have a disability. RtI must not

delay or deny an evaluation for children with a suspected disability. In Kentucky, RtI is part of the

referral process for all disabilities. In most cases, RtI is completed prior to a referral to ensure the

student has been provided with appropriate learning experiences to meet their unique needs, but in

some cases, it is appropriate and possibly preferable to complete RtI during the evaluation process.

Parent permission is not required during the RtI process since it is available to all students, but school

staff are required to inform parents regarding their child’s progress on interventions provided by the

school.
